Whirlwind weekend!
As I mentioned last week, the kids were off school this past Monday, so we were thinking about an overnight trip. We often head to Cheshire and Shropshire but decided this time to head south - down to South Wales. We left here Sunday morning around 9:30 a.m. (only an hour later than Martin's hoped-for time of 8:30!) and headed for our first stop; Aberystwyth.
I think the last time we were there Christian was around 18 months old. We went straight to the Aberystwyth Electric Cliff Railway . The views from the top looking over Aberystwyth and the sea are fantastic. I commented to Martin on how I remember Christian running around up there as a toddler and looked over to find him....um... running around. Some things never change - haha! We then grabbed some lunch and did a spot of shopping before heading to our next destination - St. Davids.
We decided we'd stop there on the way home and we are really glad we did. It is lovely - in fact, as we walked near the harbour on Pen Cei street, I spotted a little sign in a window that said the street has been nominated for 'Most Picturesque Street' in the Google Street View Awards. It is well deserving of this nomination! We stopped for a coffee at the gorgeous Harbourmaster Pub; looks like a fantastic place to stay too.
Sadly, that was the end of our adventure ... we didn't make any more stops before driving back home but we're pleased that we managed to squeeze so much into what little time we had!

We arrived in St. Davids at around 4 pm which gave us just enough time to tour the cathedral and have a small walk around in the town. The last time we were there we stayed overnight and the next day we found a little deli that sold Mott's Clamato juice which was an incredible find in 1997! We didn't have as much time to browse the shops this visit - in fact, most were closing after we finished walking around the cathedral, but as the weather was starting to turn, it was a good time to get back into the car and drive to our final destination of the day, Tenby.
We arrived in Tenby by 5:30 p.m. and checked into our guesthouse. Finding affordable accommodation in Tenby proved a bit of a challenge even though we'd booked ahead online. We paid £90 for a nice family room, but there wasn't really anything special about it and we both thought that it should have been cheaper, given the time of year. However, that seemed to be the going rate in town which leads me to believe the town in general is a bit overpriced. I did get a delicious and enormous omelette for breakfast the next morning though! We had planned to walk around in the morning, but the weather was absolutely awful - it was pouring with rain, and walking around would not have been very enjoyable, not to mention that visibility was fairly limited by the mist! We had already walked around the night before when we were looking for a place to eat, so we did get to see a little bit of Tenby - even if it was in the dark!

Tenby at night (not my own photo).
We left Tenby and headed to our first stop of the day, Blue Lagoon Waterpark. We arrived at around 11 am and our ticket was good until 2 pm. It was fairly quiet there which meant that there weren't any queues for the slides and we all enjoyed ourselves - though I thought the hot tubs could have been just a bit warmer! After swimming, we had a bit of lunch before heading off again.
On the way down to St. Davids the day before, we drove through a charming little town called Aberaeron. What really struck us was how colourful it is! You rarely see brightly coloured houses here, so it's quite remarkable to see a whole town painted!
